HOSA (Future Health Professionals — GCPS calls it Georgia's Health Occupations Students Association) is a career and technical student organization for students interested in health care. Members compete in health science knowledge, skills and leadership events.
What HOSA is
- A student organization for health science students. GCPS says Georgia HOSA members attend leadership conferences with competition in nearly 50 health care-related skills.
- Events range from written knowledge tests to hands-on skills, emergency preparedness, teamwork and presentations.
- There are separate middle school and high school levels, with some events offered only to middle school students.
- Chapters also do service and health awareness work at school and in the community.
What HOSA is not
- Not a medical certification or a clinical internship, even though it can sit alongside a health science pathway.
- Not the same as Science Olympiad, which covers many sciences, not health careers.
- Not every event is offered at the state level. Georgia HOSA publishes which events run each year.
- Not a GCPS-run league. Georgia HOSA sets the conferences and events.
Who runs it
A health science teacher advises the chapter. GCPS lists Georgia HOSA among its career and technical student organizations under CTAE. Georgia HOSA runs the state conferences, and top finishers can advance to national competition.
Season and calendar
Chapters meet through the school year. Georgia HOSA holds a separate Middle School State Leadership Conference in February and a high school State Leadership Conference in early March in Atlanta. Students usually pick and prepare events in the fall and winter. Confirm locally — the adviser sets deadlines and decides who registers.
How kids get on HOSA
- Ask whether your child must be in a health science course to join.
- Ask about dues, conference registration and travel costs.
- Ask how students choose events and how the chapter helps them prepare.
- Ask how many students the chapter takes to the state conference.
- Ask what service projects the chapter runs.
A teacher or school sponsor runs the group. Not every GCPS school offers this, and availability changes year to year — confirm at your child's school before you plan around it.
Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office, the counselor, or the teacher who runs the group. GCPS Insider does not keep a live sponsor list and cannot tell you who the coach is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, meeting time, or roster.
Questions to ask the school
- Does my child need to be in a health science class to join HOSA?
- What are dues and conference costs, and who covers them?
- How are competitive events chosen, and when are entries due?
- Who goes to the state conference, and how is that decided?
- When does the chapter meet, and what service work does it do?
Schools we have seen list HOSA
This list is incomplete on purpose and is not a directory. We only list what we have actually seen a school publish, so a school missing here may still run the program — and a school listed here can drop it.
Still verifying. We have not published a HOSA school list yet and we will not invent a count. Browse the schools directory and check a school's own page, and tell us what your school offers — that link is for adding a school, not for asking who the sponsor is.
