- Fall reading through a February competition
Gwinnett Readers Rally is GCPS's book-based quiz bowl competition for school teams in grades 4–12. Students read a set list of 10 books, then buzz in to answer questions about them against other schools.
What Readers Rally is
- A GCPS competition run through GCPS Media Services: students read books from a selected list and compete by answering questions about those titles.
- Each GCPS school may send one team of up to 10 students. Up to five play each round, and alternates can only be swapped in between rounds.
- Elementary, middle and high school teams compete in separate divisions.
- Teams earn 10 points for each correct answer and lose nothing for a wrong one. Each team gets one challenge per round.
What Readers Rally is not
- Not a reading-log or Accelerated Reader-style program. It is a live buzzer competition.
- Not an open club at competition time. Only up to 10 students can be on the school's team.
- Not every school enters a team every year.
- Not a spectator event in the competition rooms. The Readers Rally parent FAQ says parents are not allowed in competition rooms or hallways.
Who runs it
At the school, a media specialist or teacher usually coaches the team. GCPS Media Services runs the countywide event, sets the rules and publishes the book lists. High school teams read 10 Georgia Peach Award nominees from the current year. GCPS says middle school teams read 10 books from the prior year's Georgia Book Award nominees. Elementary teams read a list of 10 created each year by a Gwinnett committee.
Season and calendar
GCPS publishes the book lists ahead of the season, so students can start reading early. School teams usually practice from the fall into the winter. GCPS says the countywide competition is traditionally held on the third weekend in February. Some school teams form through tryouts or an application in the fall. Confirm locally — the coach sets practice days and how the final team is picked.
How kids get on Readers Rally
- Ask whether your child's grade can try out. The competition covers grades 4–12, but a school may limit its team further.
- Ask how the final team of up to 10 is picked — a book quiz, an application, or a teacher choice.
- Ask when practice starts and how often it meets.
- Ask whether there is a fee for the family.
- Ask for this year's book list early. The GCPS book lists are public.
A teacher or school sponsor runs the group. Not every GCPS school offers this, and availability changes year to year — confirm at your child's school before you plan around it.
Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office, the counselor, or the teacher who runs the group. GCPS Insider does not keep a live sponsor list and cannot tell you who the coach is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, meeting time, or roster.
Questions to ask the school
- Is the school entering a Readers Rally team this year, and which grades can try out?
- How is the team of up to 10 chosen, and when?
- When does the team practice, and who coaches it?
- Is there a fee, and does the school provide copies of the books?
- What should families plan for on competition day in February?
Schools we have seen list Readers Rally
This list is incomplete on purpose and is not a directory. We only list what we have actually seen a school publish, so a school missing here may still run the program — and a school listed here can drop it.
Still verifying. We have not published a Readers Rally school list yet and we will not invent a count. Browse the schools directory and check a school's own page, and tell us what your school offers — that link is for adding a school, not for asking who the sponsor is.
