Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC)

GCPS’s full-time, diploma-granting online school for grades K–12 — open to students who live in the GCPS attendance zone; also runs supplemental online courses, mainly for high schoolers at other GCPS schools.

  • Grades: K–12
  • How to get in: Registration (GCPS residents) — no lottery
  • Cluster: None — district online school
  • Type: Special entity school (not a charter)
  • Student mix: 73.7 / 100 (this guide’s own score)

GOC is a regular GCPS school that happens to be online: it follows the GCPS Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum, students must meet the same promotion, testing, and graduation requirements as any GCPS student, and graduates earn a GOC diploma. It began as a supplemental program, became a charter school, and now operates as a GCPS special entity school. GOC states plainly that it is not homeschooling or independent study — K–5 students attend scheduled live sessions, students in grades 6–12 must keep actively working in their courses, everyone follows due dates, and all students come to campus for required testing. Parents are expected to be active partners. Transportation is not provided.

What this school is

Two programs in one school:

  • Full-time school (K–12): GOC is the student’s school of record. Courses run at college-prep, honors, gifted, and AP levels, with career-tech, world-language, and fine-arts electives. High schoolers can also attend Maxwell High School of Technology or the Grayson technical program for half a day.
  • Supplemental program: mainly serves high school students at other GCPS schools, who can take up to five GOC online courses built into their regular school schedule at no extra fee (arranged with their counselor), or pay tuition for added courses outside the school day. Eighth graders can request some tuition-based courses through their school’s counselor or assistant principal. Supplemental students are not eligible for GOC extracurricular events.

How learning works by grade band (per GOC’s program pages):

  • K–3: live virtual sessions with their teacher, Monday–Thursday, 8:00 AM–1:30 PM, plus Friday reading and math classes, 8:00–10:00 AM; the rest of Friday varies week to week (teachers announce it ahead). Daily attendance is required and sessions are not recorded. Some small-group work happens on campus.
  • 4–5: a hybrid model — live virtual sessions Monday–Thursday, 8:00–11:50 AM, a Friday schedule that varies weekly, and independent work in the D2L learning platform. GOC’s enrollment agreement still describes Monday–Wednesday sessions, so confirm your child’s assigned schedule with the school.
  • 6–12: mostly flexible, self-paced (asynchronous) work on a course schedule with due dates, plus scheduled live virtual “CLASS” sessions and labs (recorded); teachers are available for online help. Students count as present when actively working in courses (enrollment agreement: a course grade of 70+, or at least 5 hours of platform activity if below 70). Grades K–8 should be supervised; high schoolers have the most scheduling flexibility, and days can run into the evening.

In-person requirements: orientation may be on campus; all official exams (finals, Georgia Milestones, district assessments, retests) are taken on campus; AP courses need materials pickup. Devices: a computer and reliable internet (GOC supports GCPS Chromebooks and D2L). Coursework cannot be accessed from outside the United States.

How families get in

Type: GCPS online school — open registration for eligible families (not a lottery and not zoned).

  • Eligibility: students in grades K–12 who live in the GCPS attendance zone; the custodial parent(s)/guardian(s) must also live in the district.
  • How to register: through the family’s GCPS ParentVUE account (new-to-GCPS families create one first), uploading all required documents before submitting. GOC’s registration office emails a confirmation after a complete application is received. Families who are not homeowners complete a residency affidavit in person.
  • Timing: registration opens in a window ahead of each semester — exact dates change, so check the live Register at GOC page for the current window. Transfers back to a traditional school are recommended at the end of a semester.
  • Students with an IEP: an IEP meeting with the local school is required before enrolling.
  • Graduate Gwinnett (a separate senior-completion path at GOC) requires prior approval and in-person registration.
  • Admit rate / caps: Not publicly available (no lottery is described).

Who it tends to fit

A good match when

  • Elementary (K–5): An adult can supervise the live sessions; the child does well with screen-based lessons.
  • Middle (6–8): The student is organized and can work toward due dates with a parent checking grades weekly.
  • High (9–12): The student is self-directed and wants scheduling flexibility (work, training, health) with a full course catalog incl. AP.

Think twice when

  • Elementary (K–5): No adult can be home during the school day; the child needs hands-on, in-room support.
  • Middle (6–8): The student struggles to start work without a teacher in the room.
  • High (9–12): The student needs daily in-person structure and a full school social scene.

Students

Race/ethnicity mix (GaDOE FTE enrollment count; not a ranking):

  • Black ≈ 33% · Hispanic ≈ 29% · White ≈ 24% · Asian ≈ 8% · Two or more ≈ 6% · other groups suppressed (very small) · about 2,000 students (GaDOE groups sum to 2,042)
  • Student mix score: 73.7 out of 100 (Gwinnett County overall: 72.9) — this guide’s own calculation, not an official GCPS or state rating: the chance two randomly chosen students are from different racial/ethnic groups (0 = all one group). Formula 100 × (1 − Σ share²) on GaDOE counts; ignores income and education.

Location and daily life

Learning happens at home; the Hi Hope Road campus in Lawrenceville hosts testing, orientation, small groups, clubs, “Rich Experiences,” and performances. Transportation is not provided — parents drive students to every on-campus requirement. Athletics: GOC students may play GHSA sports for the high school they would normally attend (start with GOC administration and that school’s athletic director). GOC has its own clubs and student council.
