Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST)
GCPS STEM specialty “choice” high school in Lawrenceville — seats filled by a county-wide random lottery of qualified 8th graders; not a zoned neighborhood high school.
- Grades: 9–12
- How to get in: Eligibility criteria → random lottery
- Cluster: None — county-wide choice school
- Area: Lawrenceville (central Gwinnett)
- Student mix: 65.4 / 100
GSMST began as a GCPS-sponsored STEM charter school and now operates as a specialty high school within GCPS. Students attend it in place of their zoned high school, so it does not belong to a GCPS attendance cluster — families from any cluster may apply if they meet the published residency and academic criteria. The four-year curriculum is built around three pillars — bioscience, engineering, and emerging technologies — and graduation requirements exceed state and district minimums. GSMST does not field GHSA teams; students may play for their zoned high school under GCPS board policy. Visit and ask questions before treating any ranking or reputation claim as a fit guarantee.

What this school is
STEM pillars (per the school’s admissions page — confirm current courses and career pathways with the school):
- Bioscience
- Engineering
- Emerging technologies
The curriculum is a fixed four-year sequence: 9th and 10th-grade schedules are mostly the same for everyone, students take math and a science/engineering course every year, core classes cannot be taken out of sequence, and a GSMST diploma cannot be earned in fewer than four years. Dual-enrollment (college-credit) options are part of the four-year plan. Fine arts and clubs exist on campus. The school schedules a few remote “Cyber Days” each year, with no bus service on those days. Test scores and state ratings are not reproduced here — check GaDOE CCRPI and GOSA directly.

How families get in
Type: GCPS specialty choice school — criteria-qualified, random lottery for the incoming freshman class (not a zoned seat; not first-come, first-served).
- GSMST admits incoming 9th graders through a criteria-qualified random lottery held once a year. Families apply for a lottery number during the 8th-grade year.
- Eligibility includes Gwinnett County residency and academic (math) requirements. Eligibility criteria, the application window, and drawing dates change each cycle — confirm them on the live GSMST admissions page.
- Every qualified applicant receives a lottery number. Numbers are drawn at random and posted on the school site in the order drawn; the top numbers up to the available seats receive offers, and the remaining numbers form the waitlist in draw order.
- The school holds parent information sessions ahead of each lottery — check the school calendar for this cycle’s dates.
- Upper-grade (10th–12th) entry process: Not publicly available. Admit rate: Not publicly available.
Never treat social media dates as official. Use the GSMST admissions page for criteria, windows, and lottery results.
Who it tends to fit
A good match when
- Your student wants a STEM-heavy, accelerated program with math and science every year.
- Your family is comfortable with a fixed four-year course sequence and higher graduation requirements.
- Your student meets the math eligibility criteria and your family can track the annual lottery timeline.
Think twice when
- Your student wants wide elective freedom early or to graduate in fewer than four years.
- On-campus GHSA athletics matter (sports happen at the zoned school, with no schedule changes).
- You need a guaranteed seat — qualifying only earns a lottery number.

Race/ethnicity mix (GaDOE FTE enrollment count; approximate percentages, not a ranking):
- Asian ≈ 52% · Black ≈ 23% · White ≈ 13% · Hispanic ≈ 9% · Two or more ≈ 4% · other groups suppressed (very small)
- Total enrollment about 1,300 students (sum of reported groups)
- Student mix score: 65.4 out of 100 (Gwinnett County overall: 72.9) — the chance that two randomly chosen students are from different racial/ethnic groups; 0 = all one group, higher = more mixed. This guide’s own calculation, 100 × (1 − Σ group share²), from GaDOE enrollment counts — not an official GCPS or state rating, and it does not reflect income or education.

Location and daily life
Central-Gwinnett campus off McElvaney Lane in Lawrenceville (former Benefield Elementary site). GCPS buses run as a two-leg trip: mornings, students ride their neighborhood high-school bus to their zoned high school, then transfer to a GSMST bus; afternoons, a bus takes them to their neighborhood middle school, then they transfer to the neighborhood bus. No bus passes or alternate buses. Families should expect to arrange their own pickup on some days (for example, final-exam days) and there are no buses on Cyber Days — check the current handbook. Car riders use a designated drop-off/pick-up area at the back of the building.
