Oakland Meadow School (OMS)

GCPS special education school in Lawrenceville with specialized programs, including services from Pre-K through age 22. Enrollment is determined through the IEP process — families cannot apply directly.

  • Grades: Pre-K–12 (some programs to age 22)
  • How to get in: IEP team placement only
  • Type: Separate special education school
  • Area: Lawrenceville

Oakland Meadow is a separate school within GCPS for students whose IEP calls for more support than their local school can provide. It is also the home base for several county-wide special education services that travel to students at their own schools. It is not a school of choice: there is no application or lottery.

How families get in

Type: IEP placement — no direct application, lottery, or zoning.

  • Start at your child’s current school. Students are typically registered at their local GCPS school first. If you think your child needs more support, ask for an IEP team meeting there — parents/guardians are members of the IEP team.
  • The IEP team decides placement. OMS says enrollment “is determined by the IEP committee.” The team looks at what services the child needs and the least restrictive setting where those can be provided; a separate school like OMS is one option on that range.
  • If the team places your child at OMS, you make an appointment with the school’s Student Data Management Clerk and bring a withdrawal form from the previous school. Families enrolling OMS as the home school bring standard GCPS registration documents (proof of birth date, residency, Georgia immunization and screening forms, photo ID).
  • Transportation: students may ride GCPS buses (each needs a transportation tag on their bag) or be car riders; transportation changes can take up to 10 school days to approve.
