- Cluster: None — open campus (all GCPS high schools)
- Area: Lawrenceville (main campus) + Sugarloaf Mills satellite
- Student mix: 50.7 / 100
Phoenix serves students who, for many reasons, may not reach their potential in a traditional setting. Students move at their own pace with a certified teacher in the room (the Phoenix Instructional Model), choose their schedule, teachers and classes, and study in short terms called minimesters. A satellite, Phoenix at Sugarloaf Mills, operates inside the mall. Visit and ask questions before treating any ranking or reputation claim as a fit guarantee.

What this school is
- Phoenix Instructional Model — self-paced coursework where “the standard is the constant and time is the variable” (GCPS profile); college-prep core classes plus CTAE and general electives.
- Supports — a full-time college and career advisor, extended learning days, and daycare for teen mothers enrolled full time (GCPS profile).
- Phoenix at Sugarloaf Mills — satellite site; prerequisites listed by the school are age 16+ and at least 14 credits; call the satellite for details.
- Extra classes for other GCPS students — students at any GCPS high school can take one or two after-school (“7th period”) courses after meeting with their own counselor. Traditional 7th-period courses meet in person at Phoenix (Monday–Thursday and selected Fridays, per the school’s 7th-period page).
- Phoenix Flex: Students complete much of their coursework online but must attend an in-person orientation and come to Phoenix for required assessments and exams. Additional courses carry a per-course fee.

How families get in
- Type: GCPS open-campus alternative school — no attendance zone; open to students from all GCPS high schools. Entry is family-initiated: students and parents request a registration appointment; the school site does not describe a counselor-referral requirement for full-time enrollment.
- Eligibility (school site): Gwinnett County resident; at least 16 years old and at least one year of traditional high school; in good standing at the current school (not serving a suspension or attending another alternative school).
- Steps: request an appointment through the school’s online form, watch the orientation video and sign off, and have the enrolling parent complete GCPS Online Registration in ParentVUE. A parent or guardian must attend with students under 18. Enrollment opens by minimester — check the live page for the current window.
- Once enrolled, a student may return to the home school only at set points in the school year (see the school’s eligibility section).
Never treat social media dates as official.
Who it tends to fit
A good match when
- Your student is 16 or older, has completed at least a year of high school, and needs flexibility or a fresh start.
- Your student is behind on credits and motivated to work at their own pace.
- Your student works, is a parent, or needs a schedule that fits afternoons or evenings.
Think twice when
- Your student needs GCPS bus service — there is none to Phoenix.
- Your student is under 16, in 9th grade, or currently serving a suspension or attending another alternative school — they are not eligible.
- Your student wants a traditional campus with full sports and activities, or may want to return to the home school mid-term (returns are limited to set points in the year).
Students
Race/ethnicity mix (GaDOE FTE enrollment count; approximate percentages, not a ranking):
- Hispanic ≈ 64% · Black ≈ 29% · White ≈ 8% · hidden by GaDOE (small counts): Asian, Two or more, plus other very small groups
- Total enrollment about 700 students (GCPS directory, rounded)
- Student mix score: 50.7 out of 100 (Gwinnett County overall: 72.9) — the chance that two randomly chosen students are from different racial/ethnic groups; 0 = all one group, higher = more mixed. This guide’s own calculation, 100 × (1 − Σ group share²), from GaDOE enrollment counts — not an official GCPS or state rating, and it does not reflect income or education. Several groups are hidden in the GaDOE report for this school, so treat the score as approximate.
